Ideas for making a small bedroom light and inviting

The sleeping quarters in your home – especially a holiday home, be it by the sea or in the mountains – usually include a master bedroom and a second children’s or guest bedroom. The master bedroom can sometimes be quite compact – all the more reason to make the best use of the available space, without overcrowding it with too much furniture. At Santalucia Mobili we have come up with different design solutions to make even the smallest of bedrooms light and bright. We do more than simply add light fittings, instead we want to offer you different furniture and furnishing ideas, as well as some interior design tricks. Here are our top tips.

Use pale colours

When the bedroom space is small, the walls and furniture need to be in pale colours to stop the space from looking even smaller. This is especially the case where the room is already dark and there is not much natural light. The colour white, in all of its different shades and intensities, enlarges the space and makes it light and airy. The bed linen and curtains also shouldn’t be too dark, so as not to suffocate the space. Light, white textiles are the best option.

Mirrors on the walls and on the wardrobe

“Mirror, mirror on the wall…,” goes that infamous line we all know so well. Mirrors are important for a number of reasons: as a reflective surface they amplify the space, reflect light, decorate the room and are also really useful for that last quick glance before leaving the house. So don’t be scared to add mirrors to your bedroom design. On the walls, they look like picture frames and, on the wardrobe, they help avoid that ‘overfull’ look, even if you only have room for a small one.

Furniture and headboards with lighting

Need more light? In addition to ceiling lights, bedside lamps and other types of traditional lighting, why not also light up the furniture and the bedhead? In the article “Units that light up: furnishing with LEDs” Santalucia Mobili offered a series of solutions for bringing the right light into your bedroom. Why not try a table lamp integrated into your bedside table, or a glass wardrobe with interior lighting? How about wood panelling with light inserts or backlighting around your headboard?

Just enough (but not too much)

Don’t make the mistake of putting too much furniture in a small space. It goes without saying that, in a bedroom, the bed is the furniture focal point you can’t do without; the important thing is to choose a slim headboard that doesn’t take over, and feet that give it a lightweight look.

You could also replace a traditional bedside cabinet with a smaller table or a tall narrow three-drawer unit.

A tall chest of drawers might also better replace the dresser, taking up less space and giving the room vertical height.
Small bedroom? This is no match for Santalucia Mobili! We see it as a great opportunity to create ever more innovative solutions.
